Public's first
glimpse of woods
The wood is an "unspoilt, wonderful place to explore"
A stretch of Cumbria woodland is to open to the public
after being out of bounds for decades.
Dalton Crags, 294 acres of land east of Burton-in-Kendal,
is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with limestone
pavements and native woodland.
The land is leased to the Forestry Commission by landowners
Dalton Hall Estate but it was closed to the public.
But an agreement between the two parties means the land
will be free to roam on for the next 800 years.
'Unspoilt woodland'
Martin Colledge, the Commission's forester for the area,
said: "It's a wonderful woodland and a place dear
to my heart, and we're delighted that the public now has
an opportunity to enjoy it too."
Francis Mason-Hornby of Dalton Hall Estate said: "We've
long been keen to grant access to the public, but we just
had to untangle the terms of the lease."
He said he wants to ensure the area is protected so that
future generations can continue to enjoy the woodland.
He said: "It's a very special area. The paths that
are there have been created by people walking through,
or by the deer that live there.
"It's unspoilt, and that's what makes it such a
wonderful place to explore, especially for children...
once in the woodland it remains as nature intended, and
that's how I hope it will stay."
